ISU Mandate
The Indigenous Students’ Union seeks to create a safe and inclusive space for self-identified Indigenous students to re-affirm and foster balance in spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional health through promoting cultural, political, academic, athletic, and interpersonal interests.
The Indigenous Students’ Union operates as both a Student Representative Association under the Students’ Union and under the umbrella of the Dean of Students.

Who Are We?
The Indigenous Students' Union (formally the Aboriginal Student Council) is a student-run organization that provides resources to all First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) students on campus and advocates for their success. Currently, the ISU offers Indigenous students:
-
Awards, childcare bursaries, and other funding opportunities
-
Peer and academic supports
-
Social and Cultural Events
-
A space for studying and socializing (with free snacks!)
-
Locker rentals and free printing
The Indigenous Students’ Union executive team is elected annually during April to represent FNMI students at the University of Alberta . To ensure that Indigenous student voices on campus are heard, the ISU works closely with the UASU, First Peoples' House, and in partnership with other student groups and faculties on campus and in the broader community.

How do I become a member?
If you identified as an Indigenous student when you applied to the UofA, and you have not opted out of the ISU DFU (Dedicated Fee Unit), you are a member of ISU! Besides that, we advocate for all Indigenous students on campus and welcome them.
If you are a non-Indigenous student at the UofA, you may also become a member of ISU if you have not opted out of the ISU DFU. In order to do so, simply email us at indigenous.su@ualberta.ca and state that you are a non-Indigenous student that would like to become a member.
How can I get more involved?
There are many ways that you can get involved with ISU! Sign up for our mailing list and follow us on social media for the most up-to-date info on our events! We offer a range of events for all students to come and socialize on campus, or just take a break from their studies.
If you are interested in leadership roles, consider signing up to be a mentor with our miyo-wîcihtowin Program or apply for one of our Director roles. This is a great way to take on a leadership position in ISU without committing to the full workload of an executive position. More info can be found on our home page.
